Breast Cancer Q & A

What is breast cancer?

Following skin cancer, breast cancer is the second-most common type of cancer among women in the United States. About 1 in 8 American women develop breast cancer in her lifetime, as opposed to 1 in 1,000 men.  With early detection and advanced treatments from skilled surgeons like Dr. Radecke, more women fight and survive breast cancer now than ever.

What are the types of breast cancer?

Different types of breast cancer develop depending on where in the breast the cells begin to grow abnormally, forming a lump. Dr.Radecke treats many types of breast cancer, including:

  • Invasive ductal carcinoma- Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common type of breast cancer, affecting about 80% of all cases. This form begins in the milk ducts.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma- Less common than IDC, this type of cancer begins in the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands in the breast.
  • Inflammatory breast cancer-Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and rapidly developing type. This form of breast cancer affects the lymphatic vessels in the skin, causing redness and swelling.

What are the signs and symptoms of breast cancer?

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer vary based on the type, but may include:

•A palpable mass or lump in your breast that feels different from surrounding tissue.

•Changes in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast.

•Changes to the skin on the breast, including dimpling or redness.

•Peeling, scaling, or crusting of the skin around the nipple (areola).

•A newly inverted nipple You should schedule a doctor’s appointment as soon as you notice a lump or any other change in your breast.

What are my options for breast cancer treatment?

Depending on the type, size, and stage of your breast cancer, treatment may include surgery in combination with additional treatment, like chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy.  Dr.Radecke stays up-to-date on the most current advances in breast cancer treatment. He performs many types of breast cancer surgery, including:

  • Mastectomy
